GIVING BACK
PROTECTING OUR GREATEST ASSETS TAKES TIME,
CARE AND MONEY
On land our greatest asset – our history and heritage – dates back 5,000 years or more before the common era (BCE). Whilst we want to share our sites and sights with the world, we need to care for them. Of course, the natural beauty of our mainland and islands dates back until the dawn of time.
Our seas, coastlines and beaches are also part of our heritage, our life, our livelihood, and our delight. Sadly, these prove harder to protect. Overall, we strive to keep our involvement with the business of holidaymaking sustainable and environmentally friendly in order to protect our assets for those who come in the future.
THE TWO FACES OF TOURISM
On one hand tourism contributes hugely to our economy. On the other it can create enormous waste, much of it plastic which contaminates our waters and beaches. Irresponsible tourism, tour operators, and cruise lines, are threatening to choke our shores and marine life alike, ignoring the damage caused by the flotsam and jetsam of travel.
To this end, wherever possible, we work with partners who share our vision of sustainability. This has already resulted in the elimination of single-use plastic with our cruise partners. This is especially the case in breaking the habit of using plastic water-bottles by replacing them with reusable metal ones that have natural fibre stoppers, with toiletries in the bathrooms, and one-time plastic items in the galley and at meals.
OUR GUESTS HELP PLAY AN ACTIVE PART
Increasingly, many of our guests wish to take affirmative action of their own to help the environment. In this case, within our cruising itineraries, we arrange to dedicate an hour or two to a ‘beach clean-up’ whereby the Captain drops anchor and guests and crew go ashore to collect rubbish from the beach. This is then bagged and disposed of properly at the next port of call.

WE ARE IN THE BUSINESS OF SUSTAINABILITY –
WHATEVER, WHEREVER AND WHENEVER
if we could invoke the spirit of Zeus, we would hurl a few thunderbolts and make people wake up to the effects of needless pollution. Sadly, we cannot – but we do whatever we can, wherever we can and whenever we can to ensure our industry takes its role in environmental sustainability seriously. We do so willingly and with a glad heart – the world is the most important thing on earth to us.
